Respiratory physiotherapy for babies and children in Brussels
Gentle care for children's breathing problems, with practical advice for parents.
Bronchiolitis, chest congestion: breathing problems are common in young children and often worry parents.
At Kiné Châtelain in Ixelles, Justine Baeten is trained in paediatric respiratory physiotherapy. On prescription from your paediatrician or doctor, she assesses your child's breathing and uses gentle techniques suited to their age.
Each session is also a chance to learn the right things to do at home (nose clearing, positions, monitoring) and to recognise the signs that mean you should see a doctor.

When to call a doctor urgently
Respiratory physiotherapy does not replace a doctor's opinion. Call your doctor, your paediatrician or 112 if your child:
- breathes very fast or with difficulty (the belly or upper chest sinks in with each breath);
- drinks less than half of their usual feeds;
- is unusually drowsy, floppy or hard to wake;
- has pauses in breathing or lips turning blue;
- is under 3 months old and has a fever.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a prescription?
Yes. Your paediatrician or doctor first examines your child and prescribes respiratory physiotherapy if it is indicated. The prescription also allows reimbursement by your health insurance fund.
Is respiratory physiotherapy painful for my baby?
The techniques are gentle and suited to your baby's age. It is normal for a baby to cry during the session; it does not mean they are in pain.
How many sessions are needed?
It depends on how your child is doing. Each session starts with a new assessment.
Can my baby also see an osteopath?
Yes, Esther, our osteopath, specialises in paediatrics. The two kinds of care can complement each other.
